Simplified vs Traditional Chinese: When to use which

Below is an overview of when to use Simplified and when to use Traditional Chinese. Generally, Simplified Chinese is preferred in China and Singapore and Traditional is preferred in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Also, there is often confusion on what is Mandarin Chinese, and we have also provided an explanation at the bottom to clear up some confusion.

Translations of Cards for Use in China and Taiwan

In China, the “Simplified” version of written Chinese is more commonly used while in Taiwan the “Traditional” version is more commonly used. The languages are only different in written form. All characters are pronounced identically within the normal variation of dialects across the region. Generally speaking, the use of the written language version is much more sensitive in Taiwan than in China. In other words, you need to use the correct language version on the cards for the country in which you intend to use them:

China – Simplified
Taiwan – Traditional

If you are not sure which language version to use or the card holder(s) plans to travel to both places, we recommend you to choose the “Traditional” version just to be on the safe side.

Translations of Cards for Use in Hong Kong

English was the sole official language of Hong Kong until 1987. In March 1987, the Official Languages Ordinance was amended to require all new legislation to be enacted bilingually in both English and Chinese. In 1990, the Hong Kong Basic Law declared co-official language status with English and Chinese.  After China regained the control of the territory and the Chinese economy strengthened, Chinese became more and more popular in the business world. Traditional Chinese (written) and Cantonese (spoken) were the dominating languages in the area before the handover in 1997; but Simplified Chinese (written) and Mandarin (spoken) have gained more and more popularity. This is because all legislative documents are required to be written in Simplified Chinese, and a large number of professionals from mainland China now work in or do business with Hong Kong.

As for the business card translation, although English is still the official language, to hold a bilingual English/Chinese business card demonstrates respect to your audiences. People in Hong Kong feel a sense of cultural attachment to Traditional Chinese, and they seem unlikely to abandon it in the foreseeable future. We therefore recommend Traditional Chinese for business card translation when planning to use it in Hong Kong.

Other Parts of the World

Outside of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Singapore requires that all its school students learn certain years of Chinese. Due to the majority of Chinese descendants and its close economic ties with China, Chinese is widely used in Singapore as well as English. You may consider making your cards dual-sided in English and Chinese if you plan to visit the country. Singapore uses Simplified Chinese for their writing system.

So what is “Mandarin”?

Often times Chinese is referred to as Mandarin. While this is not completely incorrect, there is a catch. Mandarin is a spoken dialect of Chinese that is the most popular and understandable dialect used in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. When the written language is in question, such as for a business card translation, requesting Mandarin is not clear. Mandarin can be written in either Simplified or Traditional characters. One needs to specify the form of the written Chinese language.

And what about "Cantonese"?

Cantonese is the main dialect of Chinese used in the southern province of Guangzhou (previously known as Canton). Hong Kong (a city shaped by international trade and foreign travelers for more than 100 years) was part of this province before it was taken over by the British in 1895. Cantonese is recognized, along with others, as one of the main dialects of spoken Chinese. However; when translating business cards, requesting Cantonese is not clear because, as the same case with Mandarin, Cantonese can either be written in Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters. When requesting a business card translation, one needs to specify which form of the written Chinese language is preferred.
