Tips when doing business in Russia
It is important to be patient while doing business in Russia. Russians do not trust people who are "all business". Do not expect to be talking about business right away and do not be surprised if your presentation is interrupted with non-business related talk. Speak slowly and do not rush the meeting. Business dress is conservative; men often wear well-tailored business suits and women wear a business coat and skirt that covers the knees. Make sure to polish your shoes. Do not wear any bright colors unless you are a fashion designer. Do not walk around and flail your arms around during the meeting. Russians prefer to sit and are more reserved than Americans.
Russians do not have a very formal business card culture like in China or Japan but a few things should be followed for good business practices. Exchange your business card after you introduce yourself. Handshakes are firm and you must make eye contact while doing so. After introducing yourself, you can hand over your business card, with the Russian side face up. If you have an advanced university degree, do include this on your business card. Make sure your business card is in both English and Russian with Cyrillic characters.
Punctuality is less important in Russia, but as a foreigner, you should not be late. Your Russian counterpart may be late; this may be a test of your patience. Appointments are required and it is recommended to confirm the meeting when you arrive in the country; but generally, it is fine to cancel or reschedule the appointment on a short notice if you must do so.
Make sure to have all your marketing material, including your business cards, in Russian and English. Russians expect a thorough explanation of what you are offering, so bringing a Russian interpreter would also be a very good idea.
